Essay Instructions: Essay : One -(2) two-page double spaced essay is needed! The purpose of the essay is to reflect on how the Human Behavior and the Social Environment (HBSE) content discussed in the "Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman" textbook relates to the lives of the characters in the novel, Tuck Everlasting.

For each essay, you will identify one or two concepts from the HBSE chapters covered in class and discuss specific examples from the novels that illustrate those concepts. You can integrate relevant content from previous text or novel chapters in the essay. For example, chapters 2 - 4 cover biological, psychological and social development of infancy and childhood. If you were writing about the childhood experiences of one of the characters you could discuss the content from the HBSE text regarding their biological (chapter 2), psychological (chapter 3), and social (chapter 4) development.
A secondary purpose of the essays is to give you an opportunity to improve your writing skills. Clear and concise writing is a hallmark of professional social work practice. For example, if you write a formal biopsychosocial assessment in a social work job, it becomes part of someone?s medical record. Your assessment is routinely reviewed by other mental health professionals and, in the case of a lawsuit, by lawyers and judges. Your written documentation is often the only record of your professional actions. Unclear or misleading documentation can make even the most competent social worker look negligent. Because your clients? welfare and your professional reputation are directly affected by how well you write, your essays will be evaluated on both the quality of the content and the writing.
The essay is worth 100 points; points will be deducted for exceeding the page limit, technical errors (e.g. punctuation, grammar and spelling), disorganized writing, and failure to identify HBSE content and illustrate it with concepts from the novels.

Biopsychosocial Assessment:

Each student will choose a character from either Tuck Everlasting or Tuesdays with Morrie and write a bio-psycho-social assessment on that individual. Imagine that this individual is coming to you for help. What do you know about this individual's life that helps you understand their current situation? Specifically, you will be asked to:

1. Identify something that might be considered a problem or crisis in the character's life.

2. Identify and discuss the character's current developmental stage and any prior experiences that influenced the character's current situation. What are the biological, psychological and social factors that help you understand the client's current situation?

3. Discuss how the character's race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation influence the character's situation. (EACH TOPIC MAY NOT APPLY, USE WHAT DOES)

4. Identify what barriers the character would have to overcome to address their problem (at the micro, mezzo, and macro level), and what strengths and resources the client has that they might use to overcome those barriers.
